Resentment

Resentment is like a chain that ties us to one place and keeps us there, paralyzed. If someone hurts my feelings and I continue to resent that person, that person is keeping me prisoner, tying me through these harmful thoughts. While I repeat to myself that what she did was wrong and try to understand why she did it, I am giving power to her over me. Instead of going about my day concentrating on what is good for me, there I am, letting someone put me down.

The only way to break this chain is to admit my sadness with the situation, realize that the person is different from me – not better or worse, but different – and that I won’t understand her motivations. I am not capable of going inside her head and observe her thinking process. But I can control my own thoughts and decide where they will lead me.

I also need to acknowledge that what happened, happened in the past. Now it is present and my present doesn’t need to include that resentment. Releasing the past, my need to understand everything, and the sadness brought by the resentment, I will feel relieved. It is for God to judge all of us. It is for me to take charge of my life. I choose to enjoy the feelings of happiness and peace. I choose to surround myself with people who wish me well and who are working on their own good. My choices help me to let go of the bad feelings and move on, confident. I am not a prisoner anymore.

Ressentimento

Native American Prayer Meditation, by R. Carlos Nakai

FRIENDLY NOTE

My Brother

Nobody expects that you become a millionaire or a saint before the good enlightens your heart and guide your steps.

Sublime is a charity that turns into comfort.

Divine a charity that converts into radiant love.

From tiny seeds come the giant trees that sustain life.

Avoid talking about yourself.

Fulfill your duty without interfering with the tasks of others.

Do not look for praise while going about your obligations.

Do not get stuck to small things, when the overall good requires your collaboration.

Forgive offenses quietly...

(From the book "Our Book", by the Spirit Emmanuel, Francisco Cândido Xavier, posted first on the blog Alvorada Espiritual)

BILHETE AMIGO

NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM

“When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.”

Chief Aupumut, Mohican. 1725

Chief Aupumut, Moicano. 1725
