Evolution’s Eternal Process (O eterno processo de evolução)

Yesterday I was walking in a forest and noticing lots of trees taken down by the fierce winds of summer, a lot of branches rotting on the ground, and countless others hanging precarious from the trees, just waiting for the next storm to rip them apart. It made me sad to see all that destruction. Then I realized that there was also young vegetation sprouting everywhere, birds singing, huge trees healthy and happy, deer crossing among the fields, and a lake full of life, providing a wonderful habitat for turtles and fish. While I was worrying about the problems of the forest, nature was following its course, always in balance.

Everything is a matter of evolution. Sometimes, bad things happen before the good ones shine through. We get shocked when we watch the destruction provoked by a tsunami and many of us wonder why God would permit such a thing to happen. However, after the tsunami, millions of people throughout the world create a chain of solidarity and send help to the ones whose house were damaged or the families torn apart. Better houses are built and the place learns to prepare for future disasters.

The world is in balance but if we think only about the bad things that are happening we forget the good ones and shifts the balance to the dark side. Many people take a sadistic pleasure in watching news of catastrophes or talking only about them. Others write only about the errors of politicians and never praise the ones that are doing something good, as if they were doing only their duty and didn’t deserve any praise. The bad and the good are part of the world since we are beings in evolution, not part of a perfect society. However, we need to pay tribute to people who contribute to our progress so that others will learn with them. A good teacher commends the students who get good grades and leave the bad ones alone, hoping that they will learn with the example of the good ones. For society to be in balance, we need to accept all sides of it. Nature is there, to remind us that evolution is a fact of life.

Native American Prayer Meditation, by R. Carlos Nakai

FRIENDLY NOTE

My Brother

Nobody expects that you become a millionaire or a saint before the good enlightens your heart and guide your steps.

Sublime is a charity that turns into comfort.

Divine a charity that converts into radiant love.

From tiny seeds come the giant trees that sustain life.

Avoid talking about yourself.

Fulfill your duty without interfering with the tasks of others.

Do not look for praise while going about your obligations.

Do not get stuck to small things, when the overall good requires your collaboration.

Forgive offenses quietly...

(From the book "Our Book", by the Spirit Emmanuel, Francisco Cândido Xavier, posted first on the blog Alvorada Espiritual)

BILHETE AMIGO

NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM

“When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.”

Chief Aupumut, Mohican. 1725

Chief Aupumut, Moicano. 1725
