The Garden (O jardim)

There is a garden in the middle of the hospital where from time to time I go to get some exams done. I always see it there, so lovely, so lonely, surrounded by glasses on all sides, an oasis in the middle of the busy hospital. Today I decide to take a minute and visit it.

I sit on a bench and start thinking about life. Pretty soon, I am totally lost in my thoughts, oblivious to the serene garden. Realizing that I am there, but not there at all, I stand up and start walking, looking at the small pond, the bamboos shaking softly with the wind, the pebbles on the ground, a wooden sculpture, and some bushes almost colorless because of the winter.

After a few minutes, I leave. I am now recharged, in peace. It takes only a few minutes in contact with nature, of solitude, to wash away our worries and calm our soul.

O Jardim

Guilt

Most of us know very well how it is to feel guilty about something. We feel guilty when we do too much for someone and the person ends up being lazy and spoiled. We feel guilty when we imagine that someone didn’t succeed in life because we didn’t do enough for him. We feel guilty if we work too much or if we think that we could have worked more… Guilt is always ready to embrace us when we least expect it.

We fail to realize that, when we feel guilty about someone, we are according too much importance to ourselves and too little importance to the free will and effort of the other person. The person should be the one doing for himself what needs to be done. We all have our obligations, and it is up to each one of us to realize our potential in spite of the obstacles that we face.

Guilt doesn’t take us anywhere. It doesn’t fix any problem instead just aggravates it. If we were to cast aside this dreadful feeling, we would experience a huge relief, finally accepting that we don’t owe anything to anyone. Guilt makes us vulnerable to emotional blackmail, makes us unhappy and believing that, somehow, we failed. That is why it is so important to cast this feeling aside and accept that we are full of imperfections but we are fine exactly the way we are. We will be much better off letting the people who specialize in making us feel guilty go away empty handed, forced to deal with their own shortcomings.

Culpa

FRIENDLY NOTE

My Brother

Nobody expects that you become a millionaire or a saint before the good enlightens your heart and guide your steps.

Sublime is a charity that turns into comfort.

Divine a charity that converts into radiant love.

From tiny seeds come the giant trees that sustain life.

Avoid talking about yourself.

Fulfill your duty without interfering with the tasks of others.

Do not look for praise while going about your obligations.

Do not get stuck to small things, when the overall good requires your collaboration.

Forgive offenses quietly...

(From the book "Our Book", by the Spirit Emmanuel, Francisco Cândido Xavier, posted first on the blog Alvorada Espiritual)

BILHETE AMIGO

NATIVE AMERICAN WISDOM

“When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.”

Chief Aupumut, Mohican. 1725

Chief Aupumut, Moicano. 1725
